Salary / Income

Why should this be a general taboo ? I work in the public sector as a civil servant (“fonctionnaire”), funded by French taxpayers. I pay my taxes, and I like open data.

The figure below shows the evolution of my income throughout my career, beginning with my PhD fellowship in 2001 and leading up to my current (2024) position at INRAE, including about 8 years abroad: first in academia with a ~25K€ postdoctoral contract at the CRG (Barcelona, Catalunya), then in industry, with a $85,000 contract at Affymetrix (California, USA) and a 45K€ contract at Integromics near Madrid (Spain). For more details about my career, please see the Curriculum section or my HDR (link above, in French).

Incoming

A few additional precisions:

  • all figures are in euros, except for the obvious US salary.
  • a few values are missing or approximated for various reasons (for instance in Spain, I used to get 14 payments for 12 months, so I had to adjust).
  • the three salary decreases correspond to specific transitions: the move from the USA to the EU (2008-2009), the shift from the private to the public sector (2012-2013), and the implementation of French tax legislation changes, with income tax now deducted up front (“prélèvement à la source”, from 2019).

As of 2024, after 20+ years of experience in scientific research and 12 years at INRAE (as “CR2”, “CR1” then “CRCN”), I earn just under 3K€/month – more than twice the French minimal wage. Importantly, this cannot be considered as representative of the research community, not even at INRAE. Due to my position, which requires political neutrality in professional contexts (“devoir de réserve”), I cannot comment further on this topic here. Feel free to contact me if you’d like more information.

Time Machine

Just for fun, this is what my website looked like in 2005, while I was moving from Toulouse to Barcelona.

Ouch

Yes, time flies!
